EU introduces the “Click-to-Cancel” rule

The European “Click to cancel” refers to a new European Union (EU) rule, effective from June 19, 2026, that requires businesses selling goods, services, or digital content online to consumers in the EU to provide a simple, user-friendly “withdrawal function” for contract cancellation. This means consumers must be able to cancel their contracts online with ease, not just through customer service calls or mail. This function could be a prominent button or link that leads to an automated cancellation process, which confirms receipt of the request.
Key requirements of the new rule
  • Mandatory withdrawal function: Online businesses must provide a dedicated online cancellation mechanism.
  • Simple and accessible: The cancellation function must be easy to find and use, not hidden or complicated.
  • Same medium: Consumers must be able to cancel through the same online interface where they entered the contract.
  • Automated confirmation: Businesses must provide an automated confirmation of receipt for the cancellation request.
  • No mandatory interaction: Consumers cannot be forced to interact with a customer service representative to cancel.
What this means for consumers
  • You will be able to cancel contracts, such as subscriptions, online with a simple click.
  • The process will be as straightforward as signing up for the contract.
  • You will not have to navigate complex menus or speak to a representative to cancel.
What this means for businesses
  • You must update your online interfaces to include a clear “cancel” button or link.
  • You must ensure the cancellation process can be completed online, without requiring other communication methods.
  • You should provide an automated confirmation of the cancellation to the customer.
